Calckey.social is an independent online publication exploring history, technology, philosophy, spirituality, culture, and the many subjects that fall somewhere in between.
We publish articles, guides, reference material, and original research covering an unusually broad range of interests. From forgotten writing systems and the history of the internet to religious movements, ancient symbolism, mythology, economics, and the development of human thought, our interests are not confined to any particular discipline.
Some subjects are widely discussed but poorly explained. Others have an extraordinary amount of surviving material but remarkably little written for the ordinary reader. We are interested in both.
An internet worth exploring
The internet is at its best when it allows people to discover things they never knew they were interested in.
Calckey.social is built around that idea. Our articles are intended to be useful whether you arrive with a specific question, are researching an unfamiliar subject, or simply find yourself following one curiosity into another.
We believe that specialist knowledge should be accessible without being oversimplified. A subject can be complicated without its explanation being unnecessarily difficult, and an obscure question can deserve just as much attention as a popular one.
Our publishing interests include:
- History and religion: Historical movements, religious traditions, unusual events, forgotten figures, and the ideas that shaped them.
- Spirituality and esotericism: Anthroposophy, alchemy, Hermeticism, symbolism, mythology, and the history of Western esoteric thought.
- Technology and the internet: Software, digital culture, online communities, historical technologies, and practical guides.
- Philosophy and society: Economics, social organisation, education, human freedom, and alternative approaches to familiar problems.
- Reference and research: Detailed explanations, historical documents, unusual writing systems, and useful information that deserves a permanent home online.
These categories are starting points rather than boundaries. Interesting subjects rarely respect the divisions we create between them.
Our approach
We take the subjects we cover seriously.
That means approaching historical ideas in their own context, understanding religious and philosophical traditions on their own terms, and giving unfamiliar perspectives the attention they deserve.
Where possible, our articles draw upon original writings, historical documents, and other identifiable sources. We distinguish between historical accounts, traditional interpretations, and later developments without reducing every discussion to an argument about which perspective the reader should adopt.
Our purpose is to explain, explore, and document. Readers can form their own conclusions.
We are equally interested in the practical. Sometimes the most useful thing a publication can offer is a straightforward answer to a very specific question.
Above all, Calckey.social is intended to be somewhere worth returning to: a growing collection of useful information, unusual knowledge, and ideas that might otherwise remain difficult to find.
Independent publishing
Calckey.social is operated by Astronomica Ltd, an independent UK company working across publishing, media, design, technology, and digital communications.
We believe there is still a place on the web for independent publications that are not restricted to a single subject, a single audience, or the demands of the news cycle. We also have accepted an invitation to become a member of the IEA.
Some things are worth publishing because they matter today. Others are worth publishing because someone might still be looking for them twenty years from now.
